Readiness Resource Group Incorporated (RRG) has a long history of providing instruction on active shooter response for both the private and public sectors. We also develop corporate active shooter plans, internal and external communications messages, and business procedures to support the first responder response and employee actions to protect themselves, co-workers and guests during adverse incidents. As a society we do not expect a teacher to leave their students or a nurse to abandon their patients, thus the employee and business has a duty of care to protect their customers, contractors, vendors, volunteers and tenants. But how can they do this?
After providing Active Shooter Programs in dozens of cities we realized the traditional approach of mass gatherings of trainees in an auditorium to listen to an instructor was not the most technically effective or economic approach. Our goal is to provide valuable information and actions to businesses and employees who are on the front line of an emergency, particularly an active shooter incident. We recognize that barriers to timely training include the costs associated with overtime and the business disruption when valuable staff members are taken out of the workplace for an extended seminar or workshop. We needed a more flexible, less disruptive and low cost option to impart lifesaving information to enhance business resilience and personal protection. Each training module is $12 for employees and $24 for the executives who complete two modules, one for their respective business model and one as an executive who must manage the business and employees during this emergency. Our analysis gave way to the creation of the ActiveShooterTest.com learning portal.
This website was developed to present active shooter response material as economically and concisely as possible in a relaxed setting and at the speed of the user. The material is not a watered down version, but relevant, timely and actionable information that provides insight into an active shooter emergency. What type of material?
Behind the login feature are thirty (30) different training modules. Twenty-three (23) modules are designed for specific business models, such as hotels, casinos, department stores, hospitals and supermarkets to name only a few. Each business model has their unique features and challenges that hamper the law enforcement response. Understanding these issues and options for response will have significant impact on the response time to neutralize the threat. Further, each module emphasizes the importance of understanding the nuances of each line of business, which only the business managers and employees know in detail. It articulates what the workforce can do to assist law enforcement in its response, and makes the employee and the business management team not mere victims or observers in an emergency, but a valuable partner for enhanced safety and business resilience.
In addition to the specific courses designed by business areas, there are seven (7) clearly identified topics, such as Insider Threat, Private Security Officers/Guards, Workplace Violence, Teachers, Crisis Management for Executives and Fire preparedness for employees which provide a treasury of additional information for safety and survival. As an example, an “Insider Threat” presents a minimum of twenty-five (25) unique challenges for first responder and in-house security officers during an active shooting. The real question may be, does the business’s Active Shooter Plan list an insider threat as a specific category, let alone what preventive measures are listed in the plan to counter an insider threat? Most training offered today fails to address these critical aspects of the active shooter threat.
